The awe inspiring sight of the floral gardens spanning over fifty five acres is one renowned internationally. One of Canada’s National Historic Sites, it started out for another purpose entirely. In the early nineteen hundreds, Robert Pim Butchart founded a cement factory at Tod Inlet, on the west coast of Canada to manufacture Portland cement. The era of the steam locomotive has passed with the invention of the automobile, yet in the southwestern part of Colorado, the lonesome piercing whistle of the steam locomotive echoes down the Animas Canyon as sightseers and tourists watch for bighorn sheep on the high cliffs above. The city of Houston, Texas was founded in 1836, named for Sam Houston, hero of the Battle of San Jacinto that ensured independence from Mexico. He then became the first president of the new Republic of Texas.
